Austria is a very small country with a population of just about 8.5 million people. However, there is no place in this world, you cannot find Austrians somewhere. I do not know why and how, but until now, everywhere I went to, I found Austrians, who were established in this region already. The same thing happened to me in Shanghai.
Xuan, a friend from Shanghai, asked me whether I knew that there was a Viennese Coffeehouse in Shanghai. I, coming from Shaoxing and having left every idea of Austria behind, was shocked when I heard about the existence of an Austrian Café in the middle of Shanghai. And guess what: The café is located in Shaoxing Lu (Shaoxing Street)! Of course, next day’s lunch was already planned and I hoped, Austrian food was not too bad after getting used to the light and ricey Chinese food I ate for two months now.
I took the taxi to go there since Shaoxing Lu was relatively far away from my place and I went into Shanghai’s downtown. Vienna Café is located very close to the famous Maoming Lu, it is just a block away from the buzzing street full of bars, finally situated in 25, Shaoxing Lu.
When you enter the café, you are instantly reminded of a typical Viennese Café as we have it in Salzburg. And in the end, you get to know that the chef actually is from Salzurg and with my situation at that time — being a lonely Austrian in the big city of Shanghai — this was perhaps one of the nicest things that could happen: Having a chat about the most delicious Stiegl’s Bier, about Schnitzel, real juices (and not the extracts you get all over the world) and so on.
If you are Austrian or you like Austrian culture, this café is a must.
