I will not judge what happened, because I do not understand Chinese culture that well, but for all the other cultures I know, this would be a shame for somebody to do. What happened?
Before I left Shaoxing, I talked to Jane about having dinner together in Shanghai. Both of us liked guo tie, so there was no big thing about that. When Patrick and Jane arrived in Shanghai, we went to the restaurant where they serve this stuff and ordered. Patrick took ten, me the same, Jane ordered twenty and… confronted me that I have to pay for her. (It was not a question, it was something like: You pay, haha!) – It was not a big problem for me although this kind of surprise is not the one I like, but I agreed to pay. But with her next action, Jane took the cake.
When I took out my wallet to pay, she called me to order a soup for her. I asked her which one, and the answer was: You pay, so of course the most expensive. And she ordered.
